CHIANG,CHEN-YU(江晨羽)

This was my first time visiting Yuanlin Zen Temple and Funing Temple. At Yuanlin Zen Temple, I gained a deeper understanding of the history and culture of Buddhism and felt the tranquility and harmony that the temple conveys. At Funing Temple, I experienced the strength and protection that the Mazu faith brings to people.

This visit taught me how to remain steadfast and hopeful in the face of difficulties, and helped me realize how the power of faith can inspire people and promote mutual support and compassion among individuals. Since this was a large-scale competition involving more than five participants, I also learned how to communicate effectively with my teammates.

This visit not only deepened my understanding of religious culture but also helped me grow spiritually. I will carry these valuable experiences and lessons into my daily life, striving to become a better version of myself.

This was my first time participating in the Cyberfair competition, and also the first time I learned about Yuanlin Zen Temple and Funing Temple.

We started our visit at Funing Temple and took part in a traditional worship ceremony. We prayed to Wen Chang Dijun, the God of Literature, and Zhusheng Niangniang, the Goddess of Childbirth. I was especially surprised to learn that there is a deity specifically in charge of blessing childbirth, which was something I had never known before. This experience gave me new insight into Taoist deities and Taiwanese folk beliefs.

When I first saw Yuanlin Zen Temple, I was amazed by its towering structure—it’s as tall as a seven-story building! The temple is filled with various Buddhist statues, and I was introduced to many customs and traditions I had never encountered before. It gave me a deeper appreciation for the solemnity and richness of Buddhist culture.

This visit not only broadened my knowledge but also deepened my understanding of Buddhism and folk religions. It was a meaningful and unforgettable learning journey.

At the beginning, I felt quite unfamiliar with this competition, as it was my first time participating. Along with the unfamiliarity came a mix of excitement and curiosity about what I would experience.

During the visit, the place that left the deepest impression on me was Yuanlin Zen Temple. The moment I stepped inside, I was struck by the solemn atmosphere that existed within its peaceful surroundings. It was a place that inspired quiet reflection and respect.

As we prepared for the event, I gradually came to understand the purpose behind our teacher’s guidance in joining this competition. I am truly grateful for the teacher’s thoughtful planning, which provided us with such a valuable and enriching experience.

Through this opportunity, I not only learned more about teamwork and communication but also strengthened the bond with my teammates. I hope that this experience will help me continue to improve my collaborative skills and apply them in future challenges.

CHEN,YU-TUNG(陳禹彤)

This was my second time participating in the Cyberfair. For this year’s project, we chose to visit Funing Temple and Yuanlin Zen Temple in Yuanlin. Through this experience, I not only gained valuable knowledge but also created many unforgettable memories.

I’m truly grateful to the staff at Funing Temple and Yuanlin Zen Temple for their warm hospitality and detailed explanations about the history and architectural features of the temples. Their insights gave me a much deeper understanding of religious culture.

After the visit, one of my classmate’s grandmothers kindly treated us to snacks and drinks, and even gave us small gifts. It was a heartwarming gesture that made the day even more special.

I especially want to thank the temple staff for their thoughtful guidance, the classmates who helped take photos, and the teacher who led us on this visit. Thanks to all of them, the experience was both enriching and meaningful. This activity not only broadened my horizons but also left me with lasting memories.

LAI,CHIAO-HAN(賴巧涵)

After entering sixth grade, I participated in the Cyberfair for the first time. Our teacher used time after school on Wednesday to take us on a visit to Funing Temple and Yuanlin Zen Temple. We first explored Funing Temple and then moved on to Yuanlin Zen Temple. Through this field trip, I learned about both Buddhism and Taoism, and also observed the differences between the two religions.

We took photos to document and compare these differences, gaining insights into the contrasts in architectural styles, symbolic figures, and religious practices between Taoism and Buddhism. This process was both educational and enriching.

I am especially grateful to our teacher for organizing and leading the trip, and to the kind monk at Yuanlin Zen Temple who guided us through the tour. With their help, this visit went smoothly and allowed me to develop a deeper understanding of religious culture.

Yuanlin Zen Temple is a grand Japanese-style wooden Buddhist temple, embodying both traditional elegance and modern majesty. According to legend, the building materials originally intended for the Taipei Yuanshan Shrine (now the Grand Hotel) were repurposed for this temple. It was founded by the Japanese monk Master Okabe Kaido and his followers in 1931 and completed in 1937. The temple was constructed using traditional Japanese timber beam and column techniques, covering over 400 pings (approx. 13,200 sq ft), with the buildings occupying 70% of the site.

After more than sixty years of exposure to the elements, the wooden beams began to decay due to insect damage and weathering. To preserve this sacred space, the temple was reconstructed in 1995 using reinforced concrete, transforming it into a modern Buddhist sanctuary and a permanent center for the propagation of the Dharma.

Stepping into the temple, one can immediately sense the immense vow and dedication behind its creation. Every beam of concrete, every detail of its layout, reflects a sincere and meticulous commitment to the Dharma. This remarkable achievement stands as a testament to the faith and devotion of countless followers, a place where the light of Buddhism continues to shine, guiding people toward compassion, understanding, and spiritual growth.

May Yuanlin Zen Temple continue to flourish and stand tall at the forefront of the Buddhist world. And may every practitioner, under the boundless light of the Dharma, find their inner lamp of wisdom, open the door to enlightenment, realize their true nature, and ultimately attain Buddhahood.

CHU,HSIEN-JEN(朱顯仁)

This was my first time participating in the Cyberfair, and also my very first visit to Funing Temple—a place deeply rooted in traditional beliefs.

The moment I stepped into Funing Temple, my attention was immediately drawn to the majestic deity statue at the center of the hall. Its solemn presence inspired a sense of reverence. We then began our tour of the temple, learning about the gods worshipped there and the stories behind them, which gave me a new appreciation for Taoist culture.

Later, we visited Yuanlin Zen Temple. I was instantly captivated by its ancient and dignified architecture. The towering structure felt like a gateway to a peaceful, secluded world. As I slowed my pace, I felt a deep sense of calm and spiritual comfort.

Inside the temple, the grand statues of the Buddhas welcomed us with serene and compassionate expressions. Every statue and architectural detail reflected the passage of time and stood as a symbol of the enduring faith of the people.

During the visit, we were fortunate to listen to the monks’ explanations. Their gentle voices and kind demeanor helped me better understand Buddhist teachings and made me feel the warmth and strength that faith can offer.

This experience not only deepened my knowledge of religious culture but also brought a sense of peace to my heart. It was a memorable and meaningful journey of learning and reflection.

Ever since the last Cyberfair competition ended, I secretly made a wish: if I ever had the chance to participate again, I would definitely take it. To my delight, that wish came true! When I found out I could join the Cyberfair once more, I was filled with excitement and anticipation—like a dream taking flight again.

This year’s theme is “Yuanlin Zen Temple,” a Buddhist temple rich in history and cultural significance. As soon as I heard the topic, I felt a surge of confidence and enthusiasm, especially because I’ve always been fascinated by subjects related to religion and culture. I knew this competition wouldn’t just be about winning, but about embarking on a meaningful journey of learning and discovery.

I look forward to working with my team through the preparation process, growing together, and deepening our understanding. More than anything, I hope our hard work pays off and that we can achieve a great result—creating memories we can all be proud of.
