Xingxian Academy serves both educational and religious roles, with its primary deity being Wenchang Dijun—the God of Literature in traditional folk belief, who governs academic success and examinations. During major exam seasons, students and their families often visit the academy to burn incense and pray, lighting “Wenchang Lamps” to seek blessings for outstanding exam results. Wenchang Dijun symbolizes not only wisdom and academic achievement, but also embodies the community’s hopes for educational prosperity.

In addition to Wenchang, the rear hall—known as the “Hall of Sages”—enshrines Confucius, Cangjie (the legendary inventor of Chinese characters), and other revered figures from Chinese history. The academy also honors Mr. Qiu Hai, a key figure in its founding during the Qing Dynasty. His spirit tablet is placed within the hall and worshipped by later generations in recognition of his educational contributions.

The religious practices at Xingxian Academy reflect a fusion of Confucian and Taoist traditions. The site venerates deities while also paying homage to sages, representing the Taiwanese cultural value of “respecting both gods and education.” Each year on the 3rd day of the second lunar month—Wenchang Dijun’s birthday—a grand traditional ritual is held. Participants perform formal ceremonies including three kneelings and nine prostrations, along with a “three-offering” rite. These solemn ceremonies reflect the academy’s dedication to preserving and passing down traditional beliefs.
A reading room has been established next to the deity’s statue for public reading and study.
