Mazu is the goddess of the ocean in Chinese folk belief. Her belief mainly originated from Meizhou Island and expanded to coastal areas such as Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, Hainan, Jiaodong Peninsula, Tianjin and other areas. The legend of Mazu has also been spread by immigrants in Taiwan, Ryukyu, Japan, Singapore and other places.

It is said that Mazu’s original name was Lin Mo and her nickname was Mo Niang. She lived in Putian County, Xinghua Army during the Northern Song Dynasty. She was considered to be extremely intelligent but taciturn. Mazu became a Buddhist and Taoist fairy who divined fortunes and fortunes for people and remained unmarried throughout her life.

Mazu belief is particularly popular in Taiwan. Many Mazu temples are distributed across Taiwan and have become an important part of Taiwanese folk beliefs.
