Food is essential to life. In today’s world, eating organic, safe, nutritious, and healthy food has become a priority for everyone. Rice is a staple in our diet and a key source of energy. The lush green rice fields surrounding our school make our area an ideal place for rice cultivation.
Through field visits to local farms and rice processing plants, we have gained a better understanding of rice production, from planting and harvesting to milling. We even had the chance to plant rice ourselves, which gave us a firsthand appreciation of the hard work that goes into farming. This experience has helped us connect more deeply with our hometown, fostering a sense of gratitude for food and a greater appreciation for our local agricultural heritage.

-Inside the Classroom -
Meng- Chien: Let's check the bulletin board for this week's school lunch menu!
Tzu-Yi: Great idea! School lunches are so delicious—I can't wait to see what's on the new menu.
Meng- Chien: White rice, five-grain rice, purple rice, brown rice, embryo rice… Why are there so many types of rice?
Po-Yu: Our teacher introduced different rice varieties in class. How about we ask the teacher to give us more details about them?
Meng- Chien & Tzu-Yi: Sounds good!
-Around Campus Corner-
The rice fields surrounding our school are often home to birds searching for food or leopard cats that inhibit the local area. These animals may be exterminated from the fields if farmers use too many pesticides. Not only does organic farming help maintain a balanced ecosystem, allowing local wildlife to coexist, but it is also healthier to eat and overall better for the environment.

-Outside the School Fence-
The rice fields enter the fallow period from late December to early January. During this time, farmers plant white radishes in the fields near our school. Instead of using chemical fertilizers, radishes naturally nourish the soil, making them a great alternative! During this time farmers also invite children to experience the fun of harvesting radishes, The children get to spend a morning harvesting radishes from the local fields and it is one of our favorite activities of the year.
